Despite the dysfunctional family portrayed, I laughed and giggled and guffawed at the antics of the children and mother in this sweet memoir. The author's mother was able to keep the family afloat financially and emotionally by winning product phrase and jingle contests.

It was an ok book. Did get better towards the end. When researching for book club, saw that it was made into a movie in 2005.

This was a really sweet memoir. I read it after I saw the movie.. which was, in fact, a sweet and surprising movie. I really was inspired by this mother who does everything to keep her small house with 12 people afloat in the 50s. What she lacked in cooking skills she made up for in imagination!

After seeing the movie I found the book and looked online to see the author Terry "Tuff" Ryan had passed a few yrs ago of cancer. I was said to read that. I really would have enjoyed reading more things from her.
