Being a big fan of the Dune saga and everything Dune related really, i really liked this book, as it allows u to dig deeper onto the dune universe by showing you the story of the atreides house that led to its current state as shown in Dune.
be prepared for action, romance and overall an all-nighter. ;P
I don't understand why people hate these books so much. Frank Herbert was best at writing political/philosophical conversations that kept you entertained without the need of typical action scenes that make the Sci-Fi genre what it is. Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson seem to be taking the safe way and use a lot of action scenes/storytelling to avoid butchering Frank's legacy by trying to mimick his writing style.
The original Dune books are dense and make you think, make you change views on a lot of things. This one gives you backstory on your favourite (and not so favourite) characters, as well as the story of Space Guild Navigators, the baron's descent into *disgusting bloated gravity free fatness*, and Duncan's awesomeness, as well as the origin of Leto Atreides. If you go into these books with realistic expectations, you'll be pleased with the result. If you go into these books thinking you'll be experiencing another Frank Herbert mind-blowing novel, you'll be disappointed. Read it for what it is, and keep an open mind

Inventive, but not as satisfying as the Legends of Dune books. Not terrible but not brilliant either.

You know that feeling when you have so many new books you want to read, and you have even started a few (ok, many) but then you see something and all your plans just fall apart?
Well, last week I watched the trailer for the upcoming Dune movie, so of course the following day instead of finishing the many many books I have on my TBR and "currently reading" lists, I went to my shelf and picked this up.
Speed up to today, and I've finished a 700page book in 5 days.
But not a great book, or a new book. A meh book I'd already read....
But since I am a geek and a DuneGeek (there has to be a noun for us. What would it be? A Bene Geek? A MuadGeek? leave your ideas in the comments.
After reading a couple of Frank Herbert's books this year, reading this one just seems silly. I love the world in this book, and the characters of course (but they are Frank's work), but the writing is just meh. He repeats himself sooooooooo much! At times I felt like throwing the book across the room, SilverLinings style. It is as if Brian thinks we are idiots. For example he explains, IN DETAIL, four times at least, that Leto's dad and mum didn't love each other. That their marriage was an arranged political thing. FOUR TIMES! There's really no need for this. And this is not the only instance of this. I didn't feel like noting down other repetitions, perhaps at some point in the future when I'm old and grey I'll pick this baby apart, but for now let's leave it at this.
As always with Dune books, this is full of intrigue, plans, traps and blood. At times, certain actions are a little too much like caricatures only there to pain a clear black and white picture of everyone, which is really not the case in Frank's books.
But, since I am a MuadGeek, I'll keep reading everything Brian writes that takes place in this world. I will not be afraid of bad writing/editing. I will let this pass through me and after it is gone, only this universe will be left, and I'll be a happy Navigator in my cloud of spice.

Actually 3.5 stars
Not as great as Frank Herbert's writing. It's a bit enjoyable if you have an open mind and just want to read more from the Dune universe.

I have been a long time fan of Dune. When people asked me if I was a Star Wars guy or a Star Trek guy, I'd respond "I am a Dune guy." I had always intended to read Frank's son's work in the Dune universe but all the negative talk from other Dune fans nudged me away from it. But when I really began to consider the negative reviews I realized that they seemed to be a little unfair on the surface. "Brian is no Frank." No, I wouldn't expect him to be. "It lacked the depth the original saga had." But the truth was, each of the original 6 had their own level of depth, did that make any of them unenjoyable for me? No. I decided I would read these new books as one would read a news paper. The articles are telling you about events in the world, but different news writers bring different voices.
I enjoyed visiting Arrakis and the universe it inhabits again! I enjoyed it immensely! And I can't wait to read more! Does it feel like Frank wrote it? No. But does it feel like the story takes place in that universe? Absolutely! I loved it!

These are, of course, horrifically bad. I read them one Christmas break when I was stuck in a house in the middle of Missouri with nothing to do but read these or watch ER. Last time I forgot to take a book with me to that house!
