This was my first Stephen King book and it did not make me a fan. His thoughts seem disorganized like he just dumped out all his thoughts and published it without editing. It’s jammed packed with triggering content of pretty much every kind for seemingly no reason other than shock value.

Needful Things is Stephen King doing what Stephen King does best: small towns with big casts while shit hits the fans. Almost every character feels real, like they were ripped straight from my own small hometown and put into the pages of this "last" Castle Rock story. There was only one character I didn't really care for too much that showed up about halfway through the book but eh, he served his purpose I guess.

This book is almost a satirical black comedy in a way, and gave me some of the same feelings that American Psycho did in that the stuff happening here is so ridiculous you can't help but laugh. And whereas Bret Easton Ellis was criticizing yuppie culture in the 80s, King targets greed and what it will do to people. But that's not to say that it doesn't have its more powerful moments, as well; guilt and grief are also key thematic elements here and are the backbone of a couple of the main protagonists.

But anyway, on to what really matters here. This book is insane in all the best ways. Once you hit about halfway it's pretty much nonstop just everything going wrong and people going crazy and doing crazy shit. There were points where I laughed out loud over how absurd some of the stuff was, but that's why we love ol Stevie--he ain't afraid to go for it. After a little bit of a slow build, watching the town of Castle Rock, Maine plunge further and further into chaos is just too much fun.
