I absolutely treasured this book and it has joined the ranks of my all-time favorites. It’s a re-telling of Jane Eyre, but this Jane a totally bad-ass vigilante version. While there are several parallel plot points, it’s also entirely original. The historical details are perfect and for those who love Jane Eyre, it’s like meeting up with an old friend. I cannot recommend this one enough. Plus, it basically has my favorite cover art ever.
I liked this but didn’t love it. Even though the Jane in this story has circumstances of life similar to Jane Eyre’s, I don’t agree that this is a retelling. I thought it was sweet how much the protagonist admired Jane Eyre’s character and experiences in the novel. She was always able to find some hope in her own life because of Eyre. She was a “serial killer” out of necessity and self preservation only. She took no pleasure from the killings and they were not premeditated. It was a cute and enjoyable story.
I didn't expect to like this as much as I did. Felt a bit like 2 different stories put together, but fun premise, fun read, decent sense of humor.
Jane Steele was a complete masterwork. Not only did it breathe new life into Jane Eyre, one of my all time favorite books, it explored feminism, sexism and inequality in new and important ways. Lindsay Faye brought together a discussion of the oppression of women and the oppression of a culture by colonialism while never dropping one (or two, depending on your count) of the best love stories I have ever read. Though Jane Steele could be easily written off as violent or heartless, a more sinister truth about the way women are treated and taught to felt about their actions lies within her character. Every other character is equally nuanced and feels real and the story of redeemability is realistic and beautiful. This book is also full of breathtaking language and passages that cover an incredible mystery and unexpected twist. Jane Steele is one of the best, strong female characters I have ever had the pleasure to encounter and this book is hands down one of my favorite books I've read this year.
Loved it! A super-fun summer read. It's a retelling, of sorts, of Jane Eyre. But it's really its own story, and can be appreciated by those who don't know Bronte. Highly recommend.
I love Jane Eyre. Love it. One of the best classics of all time really. So I was a bit apprehensive to read this. Having said that I had read Lyndsay Faye’s other novels and was blown away so I had faith that this was not going to be a Jane Eyre with attitude novel. I was not disappointed as this was so much more. SO much more.
Lyndsay not only evokes and alludes to the time of Jane Eyre and to the story but fully immerses you inside that world and in the minds of both Janes - Eyre and Steele. The novel follows the story of Jane Eyre in as much as the move from school to governess but the real link is how Steele uses the novel as some sort of spiritual guidance. Whilst drinking gin and killing people of course. Although not always on purpose.
The writing is quite genius and I don’t use the world lightly. She only does what she needs to do in order to survive. Life of the two Janes may have parallels but this is no Jane Eyre mark 2. This Jane’s life goes off on one tangent after another.
Reader I murdered him’ may be the best line ever in a novel. It not only reminds you of the original novel but shows the wit and satire of this story. It’s a romance, a victorian satirical romance, evocative in tone, nature and language and the way it changes from Jane’s story to one immerses in Sikh history and intrigue was nothing short of genius.
I really can’t say too much more without giving some of the plot away but cast your doubts aside and welcome Jane Steele into your home - steele by name and steele by nature.

I’ll admit that the first couple of chapters had me worried. I wasn’t sure if 1. I could emotionally connect to Jane and 2. It would be a (too) dark story for my personal taste. However, it turned out to be a real page turner for me! The clever nods to (but not
imitation of) Jane Eyre were so fun, and I really enjoyed the way the story progressed. Also, Jane became a complex, interesting character and the darker elements were far less cringe-inducing as it went on. Overall, great October read!

3 1/2 stars rounded up to 4. This would have been a straight up 4 star rating, but the last few pages. I enjoyed the characters until the romantic tryst.
