3.5 stars. Found this hard to get into for some reason, but by the end was really rooting for Jane and Thornfield and couldn't wait to see the final twists of the story.

4/4.5 stars. Really, really liked this book, even as someone who has never read "Jane Eyre" (*gasps*). I loved the writing style and the protagonist is wonderful. However, the pacing does start to slow during the second half of the novel and there is a somewhat anticlimactic nature to the ending.

OKAY, FOLKS!

I got a lot of thoughts on this one so hold on. Before I begin explaining my many issues with this book, I want to mention that I recently got a desk job where I can listen to audiobooks most of the time while I work. So even though it's true I did not finish this book, I did spend the last 4.5 hours listening to it.

Ever wanted to read Jane Eyre but Edgy (™️)? Well I guess you can but I'd really recommend you find any other Jane Eyre retelling. But if you do decide you want to read this here are some trigger warnings.

(This is just off the top of my head and only in the first third of the book)

(Minor spoilers)

The book opens with murder. I'm not counting this as a spoiler because even though the audiobook had different art, the default on Goodreads lets you know "Reader, I murdered him" right off. That is a fair example of two things that irked me in this book. Jane solves her problems by killing people. Though the author would try to have us believe she's whip-smart, I haven't seen her take care of any of her major roadblocks in a way other than stabbing them or pushing them off a convenient place. Her murders never come back to her by the way (thus far). The only consequence was her "friend" Becky leaving after she found out Jane murdered someone. Something I'm quite glad of because I hated having 18 year old Jane describe 15 year old Becky's "full breasts" and her "underthings against her creamy skin"

Wicked surprises!

I didn't particularly like Jane Eyre, so I don't know why I thought this would be different. The murderess main character from the book's summary drew me in, but I just didn't enjoy the story. I'm curious to see where Jane ended up, but not enough to power through the rest of this tortuous "Dear Reader" narrative.

I'm not one for historical fiction, but I enjoyed this book. The title character is a mix of Jane Eyre and a serial killer, but she is thoroughly likeable. There are multiple mysteries in the plot which all come to a satisfying tidy ending. Glad I picked this one up!

Loved this book! As a huge fan of Jane Eyre, this was a lovely reimagining of the beloved classic. Armed with a knife in her skirts, the protagonist takes sh** from no one. She’s bold, confident and loves deeply. I couldn’t put this down!

So, first, a confession...I've never read Jane Eyre. So I went into this book with only a small passing knowledge of what the Jane Eyre story was about. This "retelling" was a fun and clever take on it. I love Gothic stories though and this one was outstanding. Murder, love, mystery plus a strong female protagonist...it's like it was written just for me. The first 2/3 of the book were the best in my opinion but only because I felt the ending was a little rushed (maybe they were trying to fit too much in that final 1/3 of the book). Really fun read though. I wish this was a series because I was very fond of jane Steele and would love reading more stories featuring her.

I really wanted to like it, but I just wasn't that into it.
