I went into this book wanting to really enjoy it, thinking that it would be something on par with the feelings Game of Thrones invokes. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in the end. That's not to say the story wasn't good, but it certainly wasn't great. In fact, it was more paradoxical: at times, the action (or lack thereof) made the majority of the novel seem like an overinflated introduction, and yet some of the narrative felt hurried and muddled. While the protagonist does in fact make some strides at getting closer to his ultimate goal, it still feels as if he's no closer to that goal than when he began. Perhaps I was mistaken in exactly what kind of fantasy novel this was, not something of the political nature but more high fantasy. Either way, it certainly felt at times more like a task to read than something to enjoy. Again, this is odd because while I don't know that I want to invest the time necessary to read book 2 in the series if it's as droll as book 1, I still have unanswered questions that I would like to discover the answers to. If it seems like I've babbled and wavered between enjoying and not enjoying this novel, that would be a fair assessment as that's how I've felt since completing the book. Ultimately, I'm not going to jump into book 2 right away, but I will probably delve into it at some point, which prevents me from giving this novel 2 stars and instead ups it to 3 stars.

This is an intriguing book, because it shouldn't really work! The main protagonist is quite unlikeable - he effortlessly master every endeavour he puts his mind to, and doesn't mind letting the reader know either. There is the occasional piece of false modesty thrown in too, but that just makes him all the more galling. The set up of a large University like structure where eccentric masters teach magical secrets is very old hat, and not that well formed here. The world and its lore doesn't seem particularly rich, the adventures Kvothe gets up to are actually pretty small fry (not much above the a teen soap opera)....

And yet I couldn't put it down! Although over 600 pages I got through it in a week, and read it at every opportunity I could. So something is working here - I've bought the second one, and am looking forward to reading that too.

Perhaps because it is quite fun and light hearted to read (even when tragic things are happening), and isn't poe-faced and stiff so like many fantasy books. The characters talk like real people, rather than in sombre long syllabled words. And the main female character is quite well rounded with a personality, rather than a damsel in distress.

I have high expectations of the second book, and am most dismayed to find out the third hasn't been finished yet!
