This was a fun and lighthearted story of scrappy siblings watched out for one another while their father is at war. While obviously having major unrealistic plot holes, it’s endearing and charming à la boxcar children.

Not nearly as cute as A Place to Hang the Moon. All in all I think you could skip this read.

My children quite enjoyed this one, but I really do think her first book was much better. While there's some aspects of Dory I thought were questionable, (like the constant lying that's never addressed, but eventually somewhat celebrated) I did enjoy reading how the characters relationships grew, developed and matured throughout the story. And it left you hoping that perhaps neighbours really would take care of those around them if need be.
Seeing it was a historical fiction story, I appreciated the Author's Note at the end as well as the fact it was written from the view of "this side" of the war.
