This would have had a better score if she just removed her very weird sex scenes which are so jarring, you get thrown out of the story

4.5⭐️ Yet again Fonda Lee has given me some of the worse anxiety I’ve have reading a book 😭😂

Our journey following the Kaul family continues in Jade War and I held high expectations for this book and I’m happy to report that it didn’t disappoint.

We have more action, more politics, more characters, Fonda Lee has scaled her world seamlessly and this book was a rollercoaster to read in the best way.

Jade City was an excellent read but I could see definitive improvements in Jade War such as pacing and I just loved getting back into Fonda Lee’s writing. Her writing is so straight forward and she doesn’t waste time overdescribing things or drawing scenes out unnecessarily.

One stand out component to Lee’s writing is her use of tension and moments of shock factor. She is a master at building nail biting tension and some scenes of the book I was clutching my chest with anxiety.

Her use of violence in this book is also incredibly intentional and this is my interpretation of it but there is no where near the amount of action you would think in a book that’s literally called Jade War - I appreciate she puts just as must emphasis and importance on the political war that’s going on, the wars that happen with money and social and societal power, media etc and this is to showcase both sides of the clan.

And because of this at times it can feel like you’re being led into a false sense of security yet at just the right moment Lee can insert a moment of shocking violence like a lightning strike and that brings us the reader back to the very chilling reality of clan life and reminds us that the characters we have come to love and support are still part of this very dangerous system, and they themselves are dangerous and unpredictable and at times those moments can make us question the morality of our characters, and they are not perfect people and they too are products of this brutal way of life and that shows through their actions and thoughts.

And I think this book actually better showcases that reality of clan life much more than Jade City, mainly because we are able to see a different way of life following one of our characters who is living in a different country and so their perspectives and world views are being challenged as they’re exposed to different people and customs. And a thought it was a very ingenious plot point to help not only expand the world but drive that character development as well.

But also for our characters who are still in Janloon, they are experiencing victories against their enemies yet also they are facing at times impossible situations and it makes your heart go out to them and I was able to empathise really heavily with our cast in those moments.

We also have a continuation of a more villainous character POV which I enjoyed much more in this book and their interjections in the story really helped to build a very sinister atmosphere which I can only imagine is going to accumulate and explode in Jade Legacy and I’m really looking forward to exploring that dynamic more in the next book.

There were a couple of points in the book which some new characters that are introduced that felt very gimmicky almost like a caricature of the moment itself which was a little jarring and broke the immersion ever so slightly and at times I wish we could’ve had more time with some characters but these are quite minor things.

I’m hoping that Jade Legacy will be the explosive 5 star finale that I’m now expecting. I’m scared to read the end I’m not ready to let these characters and this story go just yet!
