It's a fine book. Certainly not the most interesting or impressive children's book I've ever read, but also not the worst. The storyline isn't very impressive, but it's quite well-written considering the very basic, easy-to-read language used.
My favorite part was when the king's soldiers tried to accuse a wolf of poaching. It's a wolf. It's going to kill animals in the woods. I don't think that actually counts as poaching.

I think I'm a bit to old for it really. Nice mild peril, magic, action and adventure story for boys. Like the pictures.

I wanted to know what my five year old nephew is reading. I'm not sure how he understands some of the concepts in this book, but I wonder if this has anything to do with his enjoyment of violence.

This is an easy, quick read.
The writing is very simple, but with lots of adventure. A good fit for children who aren't super into reading. I really liked the pace of the story. A lot happens in a short amount of time.
It's a pretty typical "chosen one" story, but I liked the set up and think it has the makings of an interesting series.
