I love the comparison to DV or any other situation in which someone finds themself living a nightmare that they decide to stay in. It felt so accurate. As a ghost story, it was wonderful. Very horror, wonderfully gothic.

I did enjoy listening to this book to get me back into reading. I did find the plot as it was laid out in the beginning, interesting, and I did want to see what happened next in the house.
The characters felt, now that I think on it, secondary to the house itself and the ghosts therein. Margaret was curious to me, as her insistence that everything was “okay” despite all the shenanigans she dealt with was clearly indicative of a mental block of some sort but that is never really brought down in the way one expects.
I did end up thinking part way through that Margaret’s insistence that “everything was okay” was a way for the author to keep us in the house and in the story because if the main character had any self preservation, she would’ve been out of there with her husband. She definitely has a few screws loose.
I did find myself guessing what was happening before it did and I was right on a few parts yet the end subverted expectations in a way I’m not sure I liked.
That said, Fredricka was my favorite ghost.
