was surprised with how much I enjoyed this book. It read much less as a typical haunted house book. It slowly builds an unreliable narrator and you find yourself trusting and believing her and then pivoting to questioning her and then back. This book was really artistically done. I hated the characters but loved the writing and the weaving of this story the author did. There are parallels between the trauma that Margaret has experienced and her time in the house which is slowly built into the story thru her reconnecting with her daughter. it's really a well told story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love the combination of haunted house with family drama and Margaret was a great character to follow. She had it rough even before September House and it was interesting ot see how her old life had prepared her for the new one.
And the pranksters! How horrible! How much I love them all! Very Gashlycrumb Tinies meets a sketch from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.
There was a point at maybe 80% where I was VERY worried a twist would come and ruin the book. I even went back to re-read the blurb to try to calm my nerves (putt as spoiler just in case? (view spoiler))
But also, the audacity of an author to put a 50 PAGE chapter at the final act! Ah! On behalf of slow reader, please no! I had to stay up well past a decent hour to finish this book, but in the end, Needs Must.

3.5 stars. It is a perfect spooky read with ghosts, an old haunted house, and weird things happening around. I can see this book being turned into a movie in the future .
Anywho, I enjoyed the story, and although the book is quite lengthy, the climax is gripping.
