This book was loaded. I was expecting kinda a straight forward, somewhat quirky, haunted house story. This is what I have heard a lot of people tout this book as. This was not the case. There are really heavy themes in this book.
I found Margaret to be a pretty frustrating narrator. She is unreliable, downplays everything, and seems to have a reason for everything. In fact, midway through the book, I was finding her minimizing SO frustrating, I considered DNFing the book! I'm really glad that I didn't though because the more you read, the more you see just how broken she is and just how much she has gone through that has made her this way.
This book is creepy, gory, sad, stressful... overall, a great read for October.

it started off really strong and kind of made me want to know more but then it started to become vague and confusing, the different angles felt sloppy. the abuse trope threw me off because it is so hard for me comprehend that someone can hurt you to the point to blood all over the floor and yet you act like that ? i am confused.

It had potential, but fell quite short of it. Although it tried to bring more to the “haunted house” premise, it’s all things that have been done before: poor family relationships that tie in to the house they move in.
The last act dragged on forever and the ending felt too cliche, especially for a modern-day horror novel. I found myself skimming the last couple of pages as they were so repetitive.
While I’m not very familiar with this horror sub-genre, I have no doubt there are many haunted house books much more worthy of your time.
