DNF 147 pages down. I just couldn't anymore. It really is one of the rare cases where the movie is actually better than the book. The character of Daniel was just impossible to root for. In the movie his irresponsibility is noted, but the character is still lovable and you care about him being with his children. In the book however, you completely understand Miranda's point of view. He won't grow up and he was at no point in trying to better himself. I found myself finding it a waste of time if I didn't care about the main character.

This is the book that the movie "Mrs. Doubtfire" is based on. The story of a divorced dad who pretends to be housekeeper Madame Doubtfire in order to spend time with his kids. I have to say that this is a case where the movie is better than the book. Both Daniel and Miranda a very unlikable people in this whereas the movie makes them both sympathetic. This also lacks the heart that makes the movie so enjoyable.

It was fun to read the book the movie was based on...quite a bit different, but entertaining nonetheless. :)

I can't remember why I got a bee in my bonnet to read it just now, but I didn't like any of the characters, and there was so little humor in it, I just felt bad for everyone. I remember liking the movie, but I think it was mainly because Robin Williams is so funny.

Um. Interesting. I didn’t know the movie was based on a book. I can say the movie was pretty close but has more story as this is pretty short. Sadly, no gay brother to perform miracles of latex and bronzer. My thoughts on the film really bear out in the source material. Miranda is exhausted and overwhelmed and unhappy. She comes off as shrewish on screen and page. But Daniel. Woo. Daniel. In the movie he is lovable and sweet, if irresponsible and a bit flighty. Book Daniel is actually a real jerk (I’m keeping my review SFW here) and kind of deserves everything he gets from her. There are fewer sweet moments and laughs in this mostly because Madame Doubtfire is not as nice or nurturing as Mrs Doubtfire. The lesson at the end of this is much stronger than that in the film and is more about saving their family and the kids than Daniel really getting his crap together.

Overall 3 ⭐️. The movie is better only because of Robin Williams. Pretty hard to top an RW performance though!

I was really surprised at how striking this short book is. A lot of the plot is driven by his need to be himself, but also be there for his kids.

This is a quick and easy read. It's a kids book I suppose but one for slightly older kids (maybe 10+ or early teenage years) just in as much as it tackles divorce and the confrontations between mother and father. There are a few surprisingly long words (such as 'ostentatiously') but I liked this edition of the book as it (helpfully) has a glossary of these few words at the back. I either knew or had a rough idea what they meant but its good to see it for any younger readers who may have been mystified by their meaning. It certainly doesn't talk down to younger readers, which is always good.

I'm a fan of the film and I don't remember most of the storyline in the book, featuring in the film but I know film adaptations often don't entirely follow the plot structure of the book its based on - it will to an extent but often there are segments taken out or not featured at all. That made it more fun to read, imagining the late (great) Robin Williams depicting Mrs. Doubtfire and facing the situations featured in the book. I very much enjoyed reading this - I managed to read it all in barely 24 hours (its only 229 pages long), so yes, I'd certainly recommend it to others.

The inspiration for the Mrs Doubtfire film
The books parents are alot more dark and hateful to each other as theyve been divorced longer then the movie time frame
Miranda is self centered and "unintentionally" mean, while dan is essentially useless and boardline violent at times
The book does have very good points and views for children going through divorce and theyre own emotional well being versus what their parents want
But the book has alot more serious tone, has none of the fun loving Mrs. Doubtfire character introduced to us by the wonderful Robin Williams🖤 but the movie did use very important parts of the conversations between Mrs Doubtfire and Miranda
Its is mainly a british humor vs american humor moment for book vs movie
