L'occhio del mondo

Robert Jordan

4.02 AVERAGE

I absolutely loved this book. Jordan's writing style is accessible, whilst having clearly mastered the craft of worldbuilding. All of his characters are so three dimensional and realistic in a way I often don't find in fantasy, which is such a fascinating and welcome addition to the book. I'm not convinced anyone is inherently "good" or "bad", but Jordan guides me into understanding them as a whole, their motives and flaws alike. It felt like it had a similar essence to LOTR, with friends from a small, rural village going off on an adventure so much bigger than themselves with mysterious and almost godlike guides, which I enjoyed thoroughly. Only dropping from 5 stars to 4 as I wasn't absolutely gripped by this book from the start and have that need to devour it. But there's many more books in the series for that to happen!

Bumped to 5 stars. Knowing the context and not getting lost in all the names and lore makes a huge difference.

Całkiem dobra, ale trochę się dłuży w niektórych momentach. Można by pewnie usunąć jakoś jedną piątą stron bez utraty jakiejkolwiek wartości. Mam nadzieję, że następna część będzie lepsza.

I'm glad I finally decided to dive into this series. I haven't watched the show yet as of reading the first book (on purpose), but I'm excited to give that a try now, too. I used to think I didn't like these kinds of "classic" fantasy books, but I rather enjoyed myself.

As with most fantasy series, and especially one as long as this one, it was a good setup, I felt. I'm definitely very curious to see where this story goes.

What an epic tale! I kept putting off fantasy novels because what I'd read years ago was so heavy on world building, gory depictions of murder, and gratuitous porn-esque sex scenes, that I had sworn off the genre for a looooong time. What a shame!
This book was so well written; filled with detail, engrossing characters, adventure, friendship, and coming of age. It was Narnia, King Arthur, and Tolkien wrapped up into a fantastic bundle.
Thank goodness for the Glossary at the end of the book. At over 800 pages, it was a little difficult to go back and try to remember who some of the characters were or who fought which battles.

Nothing ground breaking in the first book and I haven’t really grown attached to the characters as yet. However, it’s a long series and there is plenty of time for that.
The first book felt very much like it was setting the scene for what is to come but it suffered from uneven pacing. Apparently, the next book is better and the series as a whole is a firm favourite of many fantasy fans.
It has peaked my interest enough for me to pick up the second book, we’ll see how it goes…..
