Did I binge this book in less than a day? …Yes, yes I did. Devoured and left no crumbs, can confirm.

I was introduced to Rebecca in December when I joined Booktok, and she has very quickly become one of my all time favorite authors. Every time I finish one of her books, I’m left stunned and smitten. I always convince myself that there’s no possible way I can enjoy another one of her stories as much as or more than the last one I finished, and time and again, she proves me so very wrong. I don’t know what she puts in these books that makes them so addictive, but every single one really hooks its claws into you from the first page, and I just keep coming back for more.

The Vampires Will Save You is definitely not your typical vampire novel in that, as the title states, in this one the vampires are humanity’s saviors and only hope for survival in a post apocalyptic world. A really fun and easy read, chock full of beautiful imagery, action, adventure and of course romance!

Atlan and Finley were E V E R Y T H I N G I didn’t even know I needed right now, and I couldn’t get enough of their banter. This is a low and slow burn, for certain, but the wait is well worth it!

3.75 ★’s - a bold genre mash-up of vampires and zombies!

against all odds, finley survived the end of the world. she survived years on the streets, of being alone, of being attacked, of watching members of her group get bitten and die. and despite everything she's been through, she survived.

she has a fighter's instinct that's gotten her through it all.

and when she became the blood bag for one of the vampires on the wall, one of the fearsome warriors who protect the city from the zombies, she was determined to do a damn good job at that too.

she was prepared to be alone, isolated, give up her blood in exchange for a warm bed, food, and a safe place to live.

she never thought she'd be giving up her heart too.

but atlan wasn't what everyone told her he was. he was kind and caring, sweet, passionate, protective, and wickedly handsome. he protected people because it's what he liked to do. he made friends with the guards on the wall. he cared for her and looked after her. and she wanted him so bad.

these two were so perfect for each other. finley was so open and brave. despite being a little weak human she was willing to risk everything to help people, just like atlan. but atlan wasn't willing to risk her for anything.

and after years of feeling isolated and alone, emotions laying dormant, unable to be intimate with a lover because of his vampire nature, finely crashed in and made a complete mess of him.

i loved kenney's take on zombies. finally, a zombie that is quick and violent, terrifying. a creature that was evolved, a force to be reckoned with.

there were a few things that kept me from giving this five stars. i wanted a little more world-building. maybe more backstory or concentration on the dystopia part. i know this is primarily a romance novel (fantasy romance) but i would have liked to see a little more in the way of world building.

i'm also not sure i liked some of the concepts mentioned in the book. finley was purchased at a market after being put up for sale and was now literally owned by the military. there was a heavy emphasis on her being a slave and not having a choice. this passage was included in the book -

this continent once ripped itself apart over slavery, we've allowed it to creep into our society again. Not based on skin color this time—but does that really make it any better?

and i just think it's wildly inappropriate to be comparing anything to chattel slavery as it existed in the US, especially when the character is white, regardless of the reason.

"but does that really make it any better?" yes. it was better actually. the experiences of black slaves can't be compared to a white girl in a fantasy romance being purchased so a vampire can drink her blood. any insinuation that those things are comparable is really inappropriate and unacceptable. there's no reason for it. you can describe finley's captivity in a way that communicates how bad it was without comparing it to one of the worst things to ever happen in history.

i'm not sure if this was the intended message behind that quote or if the author just didn't consider the implications. i try to give the benefit of the doubt, but i really didn't like the underlying tone every time finley talked about being owned by the military because of that implication.

I enjoyed the vamp vs zombie theme. The story was unique and I finished in one sitting. The abilities of the vampires, the twist on how they were accidentally created, and why they need blood. Spice was mild and slow burn.

"Would a superhero enslave a human woman and drink from her until her blood pressure drops?"
"You make it sound awful. It's not that bad, and you know it. Don't be the sparkly, broody, self-hating kind of vampire, okay? It's not a good look on you."

"Relax, Trouble. Anyone trying to get to you has to go through me first. And I'm not an easy guy to beat."

My beauty, my baby, my heart—

If there's a worse disease than terminal cancer, it's the eternal, insatiable craving for everything that isn't yours.

If there's one thing the apocalypse teaches you, it's how to be grateful for transportation of any kind—trains, planes, buses, cars, bicycles—hell, even a skateboard would be faster than walking.

"Oh, Trouble," he groans, reaching for me, drawing me in. "Don't you understand yet? I'm not your master. You are mine."

"You do realize that we have the ultimate co-dependent relationship, right? I keep you alive, you keep me alive. It's funny, really."
