Easy to identify with characters despite how outlandish most of them were. The twists were fun, but post-twist some characters seemed to lose their depth and nuance and become cookie cutter. Has thoughtful depictions on the complexities of grief, but I think this exploration sours a little with the ending.

I enjoyed this book, it was fast paced and I needed to know what happened on that awful day when Bash was kidnapped.
This book starts right at the day of the kidnapping, you feel all the feelings that Marin has during this time.
Then we jump ahead 16 months, this felt realistic as most kidnapped children are not found dead or alive and the family has to continue living. Marin and Derek are in the hell of living without their son, Marin has suicidal thoughts daily and her and Derek remain out of touch with each other and she relies on her best friend from college, her ex Sal to keep her going.
Turns out Derek is cheating on Marin, with a 24 year old college student and when Marin finds out she goes to Sal (who is secretly in love with her, the author tries to make this a surprise but it is obvious!) and Sal sets her up with a 'fixer' to help her deal with Derek. To Sal's surprise Marin decides that the other woman is the problem, not her husband....
without giving away too much more, Marin has a change of heart, calls off the hit, the other woman goes missing anyways... now some strings start to connect, shit is about to hit the fan.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat and had me wanting more. I won't spoil the ending for you.
The parts I didn't like, Marin deciding she forgives her husband for multiple affairs and basically ignoring her while they are both in mourning over the disappearance of their son. I've never been in their shoes but they write Marin as a strong, successful, self built woman, and yet when it comes to her awful husband "she loves him" and I just couldn't with that shit.
I do recommend it, I think it was an enjoyable fast pace book that had a few surprised throughout.
