As Amy Poehler once said, good for (them), not for me. Appreciating what a truly happy life looks like and not dwelling on the past is a great theme in this book. I really struggled with the plot until I figured that bit out because I found the characters annoying. But the overall picture came together and it was a good book.

I've loved every Ann Patchett I've ever read. Lara and her family are all together on the family orchard the summer of the pandemic, and to pass the time, she tells her three grown daughters the story of her youth as an actor, when she played Emily in Our Town, dated a man who became famous, and then gave it all up. There weren't many surprises, but the story kept me riveted, past and present.

a very cosy and chill read but sadly didn’t have enough texture for me to grab onto and it felt a bit flat to me. i did like the gaze of the older woman and how she loves being a mother and adores her children! the ending was just bizarre and the story of the play coming together had no real gusto. loved discussing this with my bookclub and that broadened my mind a bit and made me appreciate bits of this book in a different light. there’s some good moments and slivers of wisdom in this book that are lovely tho but that’s kind of it.
