I wanted to like this so much better than I did. I found it to lack the substance that I found from Patchett’s writing in Commonwealth—not that I was wanting the same story, but the stakes were not high enough in this story for me to truly care. It was still a pleasant read, even though it let me down just a little bit. At least one star goes to her depiction of Michigan, and how magical of a place it truly is.

A decent story. Nothing remarkable but nothing off putting.

I haven't had an unpopular opinion in a while. I DNF at 50% because I just didn't care about any of the characters or the story. And so many people told me I would love this! I love coming of age stories, I love the theater, and I even go to almost that specific setting in MI every summer. And yet, I can't believe all that didn't do it for me. I was just.... Bored.

Honestly not my favorite Patchett, but I was lucky enough to see her on this book tour which added to my experience with the story. I loved the setting and back and forth between the mother's internal memory and her beautiful, present family, but it dragged on a bit (maybe I'm just not ready to read novels set in the midst of quarantine).
