Ann Patchett is a great storyteller. Even when the plot content isn't something I find particularly interesting or profound, she finds lots of little ways to make a reader care. Occasionally this results in too much density of material, information, a barrage of character description, but never enough to make me resent the story being told.

Listens on audiobook with Meryl Streep. The story was heartwarming and added a lovely perspective when told from the mother telling her daughters the tale of her youth, but Streep’s performance is what bounced the experience up for me.

When a mother is asked by her three grown daughters to recount her life before they were born, she creates a compelling narrative from her memories. She reflects on both the joyous and challenging moments of her past. Although I initially found it hard to get into the book, it ended up being a decent read.
