As sixteen year old Nomi stumbles through her life in the tiny Mennonite settlement of East Village, slowly uncovering what happened to her sister and mother, who each disappeared in the middle of the night, Toews paints a remarkably relatable picture of the life of this sensitive, courageous young woman, completely at odds with her conservative, misogynistic society.

The beginning was great, funny and entertaining. The plot progresses rather fast and leaves one confused. The funny word play and remarks about serious topics made light were enough to keep me from dropping the book. The ending is fine, I’m glad the main character wasn’t shut down or gave up.
