I started reading this because my mother was interested and my mother being interested in a series is rare so I borrowed it from her. She watched the series and decided she wanted to read it so I knew this would be a story I had to check out because if Mom likes it, it must be good and good it was. I enjoyed it immensely.

This stopped being funny halfway through chapter 3 & from that point on, it's just beeen appalling.
Once again, man is attracted to woman because she has no self esteem, no ability to speak for herself or support herself. What contrasts her with other women is her belief in her worthlessness, when other women demanded better treatment, set conditions to marriage.
If that wasn't the case, let's say he's got a hero complex. But he is not trying to save her, to let her find employement, or pursue education & later maybe see if they could start something. No, he is intent on keeping her, no matter what she could want if she had any options, any agency.
And the female lead, I have nothing against her, but I have a problem with the fact that we still write these female characters: crying, self-effacing, 自卑, forever apologizing & offering up themself on a plater at the first sign of kindess & secretely possessing the proper female virtues unlike the shallow & spoiled 'other girls". Let's move on from that. Having no spine (no notion of self-worth), no education & no skills translatable to usefullness or employement is not what we, as a society, should elevate as being attractive. Fuck the 三從四德.

Charming in its own right, and the way the relationship is fleshed out doesn't feel very allosexual/alloromantic (this from a westerner's perspective so, grain of salt). The relationship and how it flourishes echoed my own aspec experiences (which makes me think about my own identity and experiences of love and how that would be experienced in a different culture), if in a roundabout way, and the portrayal of the thought patterns one has from a wealth of trauma is pretty realistic from where I'm sitting. Despite the dark themes explored, if you're looking for a book where Love Triumphs, look no further. I'll be reading the rest, I think.
