Mood: Read this if you feel like reading a light novel with a Netflix series. Read then watch after (or vice versa, whichever you prefer).

Theme: Definitely a romance book with superpowers. It is not unrequited as I hoped it to be.

This is my first time reading a "light novel" series from a manga. I usually enjoy reading "book series" and the experience is totally different! Light novels have 1 issue/problem to resolve (something like that) per book and it felt like there is no complexity and depth to its story compared to the reading experience with the usual whole book or book series. I hate that it does not have a definite end with each book and that I have to read 3+ more books to get to understand the story. I am not very patient with storylines.

It was entertaining enough that I need to read the next books because this book feels like an intro to me. I watched the Netflix trailer and I feel like the series adaptation is better than the books.

I watched the anime so I knew everything that would happen, I assume Volume 2 will cover the rest of the anime adaptation, but I was happily surprised by the lovely writing style- although I have some doubts about the "..." and "...!" used in dialogues! 😅

I like the main couple
its a cute romance novel with fantasy elements

My literal only complaint about this novel is that I wish we got to see even more of the development between Miyo and Kiyoka. Everything else about this is so much fun, so sweet, so painful -- I absolutely love stories like this where a character gets to escape abuse and learn to live a better, calmer life. Miyo and Kiyoka are so cute and I can't wait to keep reading more about them.

Some lines I highlighted/wanted to keep:
  • "Yes. So when you feel like crying, let the tears flow. It's not something that would make the young master angry."

  • He'd been walking very slowly, she realized, and had adjusted his pace for her sake. Unaccustomed to such kindness, she felt tears welling in her eyes. Why did people call him merciless and cruel? He was so caring. If only she was a good match for him--then she'd want to stay with him forever. But, of course, she was worthless. Feelings of self-loathing began to creep into her heart.
  • Although she was always mean to Miyo, she was clever enough to avoid saying something that might offend a person who mattered.
  • Now Kiyoka didn't know what he could say to Miyo to comfort her. Though he'd turned down so many marriage offers, deemed so many women unsuitable for him, perhaps he was the one unfit for marriage. Maybe it was these moments, when he would freeze up because he didn't know what to say or how to proceed, that led people to call him cold and callous.
But this time, he couldn't let himself be paralyzed into inaction, because he genuinely wanted to protect Miyo. He wanted to see her smile from the hear again, as she'd done when he'd gifted her that comb.
"What can I do to build up her confidence?" he murmured.
"That's simple." Yurie smiled. "There's one method guaranteed to work--making her feel loved. Show her that you love and value her, and that will provide more than enough reassurance."
  • "I would like to stay with you, if you would permit it."
"Permit it?" He chuckled. "You're the only one I want to live with. No one else will do."
  • [...] Kouji smiled at his fiancee. He refused to allow his deep-seated disgust to rise to the surface, instead acting like the pleasant young man everyone took him for. The reason he hid behind this mask was simple. Were he to spurn his prideful fiancee, Kaya and her mother, Kanoko, would make Miyo the target of their vengeance, and he couldn't bear the thought of anything bad happening to her.
  • She thought she'd gotten a little stronger, but it was actually the opposite--she'd become less resilient. If she broke into tears in front of her abusers, the would only mock her with satisfaction.

This light novel is so cute! What a joy to read! It has a writing style very familiar to other Japanese light novels, which I find to my liking. The story is about Miyo - born into an abusive family; she finds herself forced into marriage to Kiyoka, who is famous for being powerful and feared by others. Thinking of herself as doomed to a life of misery, she tried to keep to herself and stay quiet but was surprised to find Kiyoka to be a kind, fair, and honest person she could depend on.

I love our main characters and their character development, especially Miyo's. I like that she slowly found her voice and her self-worth. Her family is really the worse, and I genuinely appreciate how Kiyoka is astute enough to understand Miyo and her personality. I appreciate how this story progresses and how our main characters become each other's support. This is an endearing story I think its target audience will appreciate.

I'm looking forward to the manga version soon coming out!

I loved this book it was a great start to a series I will be reading more of soon. The characters were interesting I especially loved Miyo and Kiyoka I really love how their relationship is slowly growing and Miyo is slowly gaining back her confidence among other things. I loved Miyo she was a wonderful and kind person who was so abused that she second guesses everything she is now slowly healing and learning to trust and that someone will actually love her despite what she calls failings. I really liked Kiyoka even with his gruff demeanor there is much more to him he is kind and caring and willing to go above and beyond to help Miyo. I loved the plot it starts with Miyo being treated like trash and less than human she yearns to escape this she then learns she has been sold off to someone she doesn't know that has unsavory rumors about him her family is terrible her step mother and half sister most of all she then meets Kiyoka there is misunderstandings but he is not all bad like she thought many other things happen her trash family is taken care of looking forward to reading more soon.

i prefer the rawness of the manga but i’m too impatient to see where the story goes and this is still just as good!

My first light novel read and it was alright. The prose is average, but I still enjoyed it. It’s paced rather quickly.
