Standing before the grave of her most-cherished Auntie, Betty recalls her early life and the stories she’s been told and read about Nuha Rummani, a woman larger than life whose presence ensured Betty’s very existence. As she faces her Auntie, she thinks about their co-existence, their similarities, and their history.

I don’t read a lot (see: any) literary fiction, so this was my first forray. What a terrifically fascinating story about a girl growing into herself in the shadow of the woman she adores. Betty, afflicted with a  unique skin color, grows up in her mother’s shame but Nuha’s love for her gives her the strength to blossom. Nuha’s story is so complex and rich, jumping off the page, further complicated by her history as a Palestinian woman in America who wants to go home and also wants the strength to love the woman she’s been in love with for years. I loved Nuha so, so much that it ached to learn of her passing, even though I expected it. Too little space, too big feelings.
