I'm enjoying this book much better than the first in the series
As I mentioned in my review of VIRALS, the first in the series (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7800188-virals) Reich seems to redefine the role of YA reading, on many levels. One other reviewer commented to me that he felt YA books were geared for the 11-15 year old fan base, which fits with what I presumed myself. Taking SEIZURE's storyline, that fits. However, Reichs appears to place too much stress on the ADULT side and not enough on the YOUNG when she introduces the text of her book, dropping things that no child of mine (11-15) should be reading or hearing in a means of library entertainment (especially labelled and geared for that age group).
While I doubt Ms. Reichs reads these types of reviews (and with CODE already at the publisher for August 2012 release), perhaps we can telepathically send her some advise: KATHY, tone down your language for the younger reader or make the plots more mature and toss them at the 16-22 crowd, a la TWILIGHT. Perhaps, being a new parent, it just gets to me. That said, I do wince at James Patterson's MAXIMUM RIDE series for their 'gosh golly geez' dialogue.
The story was decent, at least for the age level. A little adventure, no romance and some good old teenage joshing around. I can see this working as a good tv series or movies for teens (keep Reichs from writing the screenplay without reading this review first). Add some pirates (without Mr. Depp) and you have a decent tale for all to read.
I pushed through this one and found a nugget, something I always like, a crossover moment when Tempe entered her grand-niece's story. Will we see young Brennan enter the fray of some adult books soon? She has the quasi-potty mouth for it.
Good stuff Ms. Reichs. I wonder where CODE will take us, although I suppose I have to wait until August to find out.

Goonies with mutants. Ok, definitely more complex than that, but you get the gist. The Virals pack is in danger of being split up, their town island about to be sold out from under them, so in a last-ditch attempt they begin searching for a legendary pirate's treasure. There's even an underground tunnel system equipped with booby traps and quite a bit of swimming. But this story has a lot more mystery and research that goes into their treasure hunt - lots of seeming dead ends, new clues, and not a lot of support along the way. It was definitely a fun adventure to follow.

So far this series has a great sense of pacing, thrilling action, some educational interludes, and a lot of fun. I think Virals has a lot of potential and I can't wait to see it played out in the next 3 (or more) books.

This series has kept me intrigued from the first book. It's always interesting to read (listen) to a book that takes place in a place that you have been. These characters are well developed, and easily likable. I will certainly be continuing this series.
At first it was a little iffy, but then with all the riddles for the treasure hunting and everything, I liked it just as much as the first! :)
you will find yourself up all night and day reading this book its awesome trying not to reveal!!!!
My thoughts on this book are mixed. This is the second book of the Virals series by Kathy Reichs. Firstly, I just have to say that I LOVE Kathy Reichs! Always have, always will. Everything she writes.
From that starting point, I'll go on to explain why I am so conflicted about this book.
The plot sounds vaguely familiar, right from the start. A close-knit group of teenaged friends searching for long lost pirate treasure in order to save their homes. Sound familiar to anyone else? I'll give you a hint. Goonies. (Alright, not exactly a hint, but I have always lost marks in subtlety) At least Reichs brought up the parallel herself, but I still found myself sighing, wishing it were a little more original.
We can't discount the fact that this group of friends all have super canine powers, which did help shake things up a bit. Mystery and intrigue abound, and the second half of the book did have my attention.
As with the first book, I wish this were a completely separate series from the Temperance Brennan books. They are a different genre, and should be treated that way, instead of having a Tempe cameo. It brought me out of the sci fi swing, with a dose of fictional reality.
Overall, it was pretty entertaining, and a great book for teens.

I listened to the book on audio. It dragged a little bit in some parts but was overall a fun story.
It is a good easy read. Some parts were a bit cliché and reminded me of the national treasure movie. But it was fun to read about the hord and spoilet if you have not read the first book (Viral) their power again.
