In the beginning, I thought the scarred girl was Melanie. It isn't. This story happens in an entirely different part of the country from where Melanie and her crowd were running around.

It does come after that story, expecting you to already have some knowledge of Hungry history when you start. You should read them in order.

Mike Carey has become one of the writers that I will always read.

I was hesitant to read this and the only reason I picked it up was to fill my audiobook gap. I like books to go in sequence, not jumping back to preludes and "what happened before" but I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I enjoyed the girl with all the gifts well enough but this novel had intense political intrigue, sabotage, and hungries (zombies). I had an intense desire to beat characters on the head for their ignorance (which I think the author wanted) and the tenacity of the crew was admirable, the ending was interesting and a total surprise (although I suspect there is more to it). All of it was enjoyable.

The girl with all the gifts was an amazing 5 star book.  So I went into this one excited, for most of the book though it didn't live up to the same magic Girl with all the Gifts had and I was getting a bit frustrated by midpoint.  But then the end redeemed it immensely, with just a perfect ending that brought together and wrapped up both books.  There were some characters I really would have liked to see also included in the ending to find out what happened to, but definitely worth the read by the end.

I just couldn't get into this one. Oh well. Will try it again at some point. It's not as engaging as the previous book.

This story swept me away and kept me engaged. Man alive did some of the characters make horrible decisions though. The lack of communication was so frustrating and felt unrealistic --but maybe that's an misplaced faith in humans to do the right thing when called upon. I feel like I need to go re-read The Girl With All the Gifts again. Zombies/apocalypse stories are definitely my thing.

The first 1/4 of this book had me really confused, I thought I’d forgotten characters from The girl with all the gifts, but then once I got my head around that fact it was a prequel and therefore new characters, it was easier to relax and enjoy the new story.

I loved Stephen Greaves character, so intelligent and I could feel his discomfort around others.

It felt very similar in many way to the second (original) book, but it also tied the larger story together nicely. I also really liked the final chapter that linked them together directly, and potentially even paved the way for a third book?
