This was a short volume that left me wanting more. The artwork reminded me of superhero illustrations and there wasn’t much text so I flew through it. Loved the Japanese storyline. Set in Canada it had great representation. There is a second volume too.

Sonny, a young Tłı̨chǫ Dene boy, and his grandmother help a Japanese man, Shinobu, reclaim his grandfather’s lost samurai sword and armour. I really enjoyed the mash of culture in this story. I only wish it were longer, to go more in depth about their respective cultures. The author’s note did provide a lot of context but I would’ve loved to see more of that play out in the story. The journey gives us unlikely heroes and even a visiter from the spirit world, so I thought that was a lot of fun. I’m excited to see where the story goes next.

Dene own voices' story of choosing the path of generosity and healing over violence and greed. I will never get tired of stories that take the harder, more hopeful path.

A really interesting graphic novel that talks about a part of history that I never even knew about.

A super short graphic novel. Lots of action and embedded culture and history for the Dene and Japanese people.
