This novel was a very gripping read--I finished it in less than a day! While it did have that Christie/Bronte-esque gothic flair, I would have liked to see more in the way of character development and less plot holes exposed to the elements of faulty narrative with a lack of cohesion. The novel certainly set the gloomy mood pervasive throughout, but so much more could have been done to tie it all together.

I enjoyed reading this one overall but was left feeling sort of unsatisfied. Plus I am not a huge fan of the "child overreacts upon a misunderstanding causing bad things to happen, lasting guilt for child, and cringing for the reader." But it was a nice and atmospheric read despite that.

What a boring, bleak, miserable little story. I walked away from this story with zero satisfaction, a hard bar to burrow under as I can usually find some element I enjoyed even in books I didn't otherwise like.

For the first half of this book I was having so hard a time focusing on the words that my eyes were glazing over. Then for the second half of this book I was physically cringing as random scenes of pedophilia were thrown at me. And then they sprinkled in "graphic dog death" at the end, as a little treat.

Character actions make no sense either. At the very end the adoptive mother is able to easily dispatch the pedophilic abuser who has been implied by her to be impossible to reason with because of his violent tendencies by just... telling him to leave? And then he does. And the book ends.

I could sit here and type out more but I'd rather let this book finish sliding off my brain so I can go grab the next one.
