This graphic novel is a stunning wordless look at the life of a cuban girl in the 60s that has to leave her homeland behind to start a new life in a new country without her family and has difficulty adjusting. Then one day Marisol goes to her school library and finds books on plants and it reminds her of the beautiful land of Cuba. She finds her love of botany through this and her librarian gives her a cookbook on cuban meals too. Marisol begins cooking her traditional foods with the people she is staying with, and she begins to feel happy again! Very sweet story!

Wonderful historical graphic novel about the Cuban refugee experience. The wordless narrative really shows Marisol’s alienation and the language barrier she faces. End matter goes further into Operation Peter Pan.

This book broke my heart and then put it back together. Knowing that this was real for so many children from Cuba. Knowing that coming to the US was a hope for a better life. It was still so hard for those families to let their children go. What an interesting story.
