2.5 stars. A girl runs through the woods, almost dies in horrible ways in every other page, and then flash forward twenty years later, she finally dies. Nothing happens except running and bowel movements. Thank God this was so short; otherwise, it would have been 1-2 stars. I do like Groffs writing style but there was barely any plot and weird pacing.

A beautiful story about survival and contemplation over the meaning of your life. It struck me a bit cryptic, I think I would’ve would myself a bit more invested if I had been given more context about the time period & lead character. Was entirely captivated by her bravery at the end!

beautiful, devastating

This book was extremely brutal and unrelenting and yet there was a lot of beauty to be found. I’m having a hard time rating it but settled on something like 3.5 rounded up. And a reference to Lucia in the acknowledgments which always makes me catch my breath & think of her and her family.

Introspective; without a single line of dialogue in the entire book. Well written, but unexpected. I was looking for more plot, more wilderness survival story. Less religious musing and more bears.
