I love Lauren Groff but this wasn’t my favorite of her books.

This book is about of girl, escaping her past life, her abuse. But at the heart of it, it’s really about the journey and definitely not about the destination.
And to put it simply, in summary this book is absolutely boring.
There is only so many times you can read about the girls hardship as she makes the journey. There’s only so many ways to describe her feelings of being cold and hungry. I think the author tried to make this a beautiful tale of struggles, but in the end it was just repetitive . There were a few moments where I thought, here we go! Only to let that small glimpse of activity and originality leave the reader with nothing.
I did finish this book. But as you can see from my read times, I wish I would have DNF it.

Visceral, glittering, gut-wrenching. Lauren Groff’s writing is always something else, a completely unique voice. Three stars only because I didn’t have *fun* reading it - it was work, it was dense, I struggled.
The descriptive language is absolutely graphic and at times beautiful. The author creates a vivid picture for the reader which I always appreciate. However the story was extremely depressing and an exhausting tale to read. I’m not sure how I feel about this story as I finished.

This book was written well, but not well written if you know what I mean. Full of poetic prose and detailed descriptions of scenery, I found myself bored quite often. This is one of those books where the main character goes on a journey and the journey is the point of the story, not necessarily heading to a conclusion.
