My boyfriend asked me what this book was about when my copy arrived and when I answered "it's teenage Australian Sherlock Holmes" he looked skeptical. And it could have been easy to take this concept and balls it up but I'm pleased to report that Ellie Marney did a great job. Watts and Mycroft were excellent characters both together and apart and the mystery was smart and surprising, leading to a breathless finale. And the pair are coming to London in book 2! Exciting times.

There was something about this book, and that something surely wasn't the murder mystery.
So if you are looking for a good mystery this is not the book for you.
If you are looking for a good book instead, this is it.
This book grabbed my whole attention and made me happy and giggly.
I skipped the gym for this book.
I avoided friends to finish it.
Meet Mycroft and Watt and love them.I personally do.

I enjoyed the story until it became predictable and a typical YA book.

Every Breath, by Ellie Marney, is a mystery pertaining James Mycroft and Rachel Watts, a duo almost like Sherlock Holmes and Watson. Watts has moved from Five Mile, a small town in the outback, to Melbourne, a big, bustling city, and she isn’t very happy about. She lives two doors down from Mycroft, her best friend, whose parents were killed in a carjacking in London. Mycroft is pretty much a genius. When they find their friend, Homeless Dave, murdered at the zoo, they decide to investigate the murder. As the case develops, the relationship between Watts and Mycroft develops and watts learns more about Mycroft’s troubling past. As they become hot on the tail of who they think the murderer is, the director of the zoo is killed. Because of this development, they go to interview a worker at the zoo, who ends up being the murderer. He puts Mycroft and Watts into the lion pen. They are able to alert the police and they come to rescue them and capture the murderer. Mycroft and Watts start dating and from the bravery Mycroft showed, he is able to gain trust from Watt’s parents. The theme of Every Breath is personality differences can draw people together.

I thought that Every Breath was a good mystery. The reason I reads it was because I was going to Australia, so I wanted to see what YA literature is like there. I was impressed by Every Breath. I think it did a really good job as a mystery. I also think that Watts had a unique narration voice and adds interesting insight and opinions to the story. The characters were well developed and the story was well thought out. It was a page turner and I could barely set it down. Mycroft was my favorite character because I thought he had the most depth. There seemed to something new on every page about him. It really kept you on your toes. I recommend this book to anyone who likes page turner mysteries.
