I went in with high expectations for this book and unfortunately it just sort of fell flat.
*spoilers*
I just found this book to be very one toned. I also didn’t 100% believe the romance between Maybe and Jarrett. It was very much lust at first sight. It didn’t help that there were so many huge time jumps that it made it feel very disjointed. Their relationship barely started and all the sudden we’re 6 months in the future.
Also I hate books where the main character hints constantly at having a secret. I also hate books where the main character is constantly thinking how the relationship can never last. It ruins the romance when you’re just waiting for them to break up. And honestly her secret was dumb. I mean I guess she was technically married but he screwed her over and stole all her money.
Her reaction to finding out Jarrett killed him was justified, but I don’t know about her sever guilt. The dude literally stole from you and your mother and yet you feel you should have some undying devotion to him? Then she runs away for 18 months. Girl. If he’s still waiting for you after six months I don’t know why you didn’t run back to him. They were apart longer than they were together. Then they immediately get engaged. Well okay then.
I was also expecting more from the spice in this book. Jarrett gave off kinky as fuck vibes and then overall stayed pretty vanilla beyond some spanking and tying her up.
Overall this book was pretty forgettable.

Honestly, what the heck did I just try to read? The Tangled Lies trilogy by this author that came out last summer honestly rocked my entire world, and it kept me glued to my kindle while reading. Dark Notes is one of my favorite romances of all time. So imagine my disappointment in this series that sounded really promising at first. I mean erotic romance + cowboys = a good time, right? Well the first book in this series I skipped because I saw so many people saying the H was a jerk that had the h waiting to give her virginity to him while he was out banging anyone six ways to Sunday which I just had no interest in reading. But then when this one came out, I saw a lot more positive reviews, and many people were saying the sequel was a lot better than the first.
So I gave this a try, and no joke I got to maybe the first 75 pages before being too annoyed to continue. First off, it’s another manwh*re H that has the h in a puddle of hormones by the first conversation, and what do you guess he’s rude during this initial conversation? Well of course because that’s contemporary romance these days, your couple is either horny enemies or friends with benefits, sometimes both. I’d be fine if this wasn’t EVERY SINGLE CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE!
But I continued reading, even past this unfortunate and underwhelming first encounter from the main couple we’re supposed to be rooting for, because I thought maybe this book will surprise me. Well it didn’t at all because what’s happened in the next scene? Well the h stumbles across the H having sex with another woman, she spies on them while they’re going at it, and yep, she gets turned on. BECAUSE ISN’T THAT JUST SO RELTABLE? Why do authors keep writing this scenario? Nobody wants to read about it, and it also kills the believability in the romance of your main couple.
Even after that awful scene, I still trudged through a little bit longer because I thought “Hey, this is Pam Godwin, she has to make this up somehow.” Well the H begins openly discussing his plans to abduct the h and use her as a sex toy, because revenge??? Motivation, are you drunk again? Anyways, this was about the time I tapped out because I just couldn’t take it. I know Pam Godwin doesn’t write fluffy, cute, vanilla romances, believe me I listed some of my favorites of hers above. But those all felt like they had meaning or depth to them, but this just felt stale and empty. The first erotic scene wasn’t even between the main couple, and for me that’s just a bad omen for the entire rest of the book.
I feel bad because I really do like Pam Godwin as an author but I’m just really disappointed with this series, and have no interest in continuing.

I was loving this book, until around the 80% mark, and then Maybe lost her stupid mind! I actually hated her! Lucky for her that Jerret was such an incredibly awesome guy!
