I wanted to like this book SO BAD! I had high hopes and actually bought the book prior to reading because I was drawn in by the cover art. I absolutely did not click with these characters, I pushed through but at the half way point I could barely stand them and I just wanted it to be over. They actually made me so mad which is unfortunate because the plot of him wanting her for a good luck charm and then falling for her instead would have been great but even though it’s set up that way that’s not actually what happens.

The majority of the book is them going back and forth on whether or not they should be together and how important it is to not get caught so she won’t lose her job. Seriously, half the book is them going back and forth having very similar conversations changing their minds a page to a chapter later and then doing it again. Both characters talk about how important their respective jobs are but then constantly put it at risk by making out in closets, having sex in the arena, and sneaking into each other’s room at an away game. Also, she doesn’t even like her job and actively talks about not wanting to be in sports photography so it doesn’t seem like that much of a loss.

He is also pretty obsessed with her and being around her which I usually like when the book is dark romance but for a sports romance it felt out of place. At one point after they get caught and she has to talk to her boss he insists on going with her which makes no sense, she’s an adult and knew this would happen so she should deal with the consequences. Thankfully she ends up going alone but it was weird how badly he wanted to go when she’s capable of handling it.

There were plenty of times where I felt their thoughts and actions didn’t match what they had said previously which made it hard to understand why they even liked each other. Especially when he went from saying hockey comes first, to saying she was it for him after one date, to saying he was more proud of being able to watch her blossom than he was of when he got drafted to the NHL as a reaction to her getting fired. That’s a major mindset change in a matter of a month or two at best and as in love as you might be to downplay getting drafted into the NHL is wild!

Cute book! I love the nickname love but Nico overused it waaaaaay too much. I wish Nico had more character development. I feel like he didn’t learn anything I guess. 3.5 stars
