L’elemento che più rimarrà impresso nella mia mente di Cose che succedono la notte è lo scenario raccontato dalle parole di [a:Peter Cameron|2783084|Peter Cameron|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/m_50x66-82093808bca726cb3249a493fbd3bd0f.png], dal potere incredibilmente evocativo, quasi cinematografico. Fin dalle prime pagine ho potuto percepire l’atmosfera tipica dei paesi del Nord dove è ambientato questo romanzo, luoghi dove la luce (e l’assenza di luce) diventa l’assoluta protagonista di ogni esperienza. In questo caso poi, Cameron racconta il viaggio di due protagonisti, marito e moglie (di cui non viene mai rivelato il nome, chiamati semplicemente “l’uomo” e “la donna”) in una cittadina nordica non meglio precisata. La destinazione non è casuale, perché lì si trova l’orfanotrofio dove ad attenderli c’è il bimbo che hanno deciso di adottare. Ma fin dal loro arrivo alla stazione dei treni, si intuisce che la storia avrà dei caratteri insoliti. Così come li hanno i personaggi pittoreschi che si incontrano nell’hotel in cui soggiorna la coppia e negli immediati dintorni (un uomo d’affari, una cantante, un santone con poteri di guaritore). Le tre stelline (ossia la parte che ho più apprezzato di questo libro) si riferisce principalmente alla capacità che ha Cameron di allestire un palcoscenico perfetto. Le due stelline che mancano riguardano invece quello che va in scena su quel palco, ossia lo sviluppo della storia, che non sempre mi ha convinto (o più semplicemente che non sempre sono stato in grado di cogliere per quello che avrebbe voluto trasmettere).

Burrowing into a novel that crescendos with inertia, reading What Happens at Night is very much an experience of drifting into the unconscious. The images are as they might appear in dreams: both vivid and foggy. Characters are connected to each other not as it relates to the narrative, but by something far deeper and more elemental. Peter Cameron has brought us a surrealist painting in disguise of a novel. It is a murky, romantic piece, not meant to be read by the bedside but hung in a gallery (surrounded by smoke and mirrors - perhaps in another grand European hotel).
