I thought for a long time how to frame this review since I gave the book 4 stars but had some concerns.
To start, I enjoyed the read. I think it was an interesting story with decently developed characters. I think the general premise was a little obvious in terms of the "villains" of the stories and who would come out on top. The story is completely crafted to lead you there.
The biggest issue I had with this one is the fact too much happens in too little space. The challenge for the throne felt so incredibly rushed because there was the decision to focus on potential romances, secrets that were not really well handled, and the building of the dragon/person relationships. I feel like maybe the challenge itself should have been the second book or the book should have been longer. We just kept jumping and jumping and jumping from POV to POV to POV so everyone gets boiled down to their archetypes. The soldier who will not wield a sword. The girl with the life/death secret. The murderer who has no redeeming qualities. The trickster who uses comedy to cover up pain. The servant who never feels worthy.
By the end of the book characters are acting unlike themselves...Emilia. Characters are suddenly over all of their damage. I guess I wanted more. Just more.
Sure I'll read the next book. I want to see where it goes but I hope it feels a little less rushed.

Was very promising at the start, but felt the latter third was rushed.
