The only thing I ever knew about menopause was that you would have hot flashes and your period would stop. It's incredibly frustrating that I'm a well-educated, well-read woman of a certain age, and that was *all* I knew about something that is life-altering for half the human population.
The first book I read to gather more info about this stage of life was "Menopause Manifesto" by Dr Jen Gunter, and I really appreciated the down to earth, supportive tone of that book. "The New Menopause" is more of a reference book for specific symptoms, and my main takeaway from this book was how much of a difference hormone therapy can make to both your health and your quality of life. I do feel like I'm starting to get a more complete understanding by reading multiple books.
I listened to the audiobook version of this book, read by the author. Furthermore, it was an audiobook from the library. (I love me a library book!) I've already ordered a physical copy of the book for myself so that I can refer back to the info as needed.. definitely recommend..

At first I was like, okay so this whole book is just an ad for hormone replacement therapy. I wouldn’t say that’s totally inaccurate now that I’ve finished but it did end up having some informative parts about other things. I think now that I’ve listened to the whole thing, this may be one of those books that you need to have a physical copy on hand for reference if you’re female age 35-65. Although that may be unnecessary because it really just says if anything is wrong with you, like 95% of the time it’s due to your hormones and you should talk to your doctor about HRT. It was interesting to see the vast number of symptoms that were potentially attributed to menopause and she did occasionally suggest things such as exercise and diet and occasionally talked about supplements (although she only believes in evidence based treatments and so is reluctant to talk about those types of things due to them being largely unregulated). She also has resources on her website that sound helpful like a compendium of practitioners who real people found helpful and not dismissive during menopause. Overall I think it was helpful and as I head towards this part of my life I will be better equipped for having read this.

The New Menopause is a powerful and empowering resource for women - middle-aged and up! - that encourages us to take the reins of our health and our journeys through perimenopause and into menopause. Women's health has always been deemed by society and the medical profession as less than, receiving a glaring lack of support, importance and research considering women make up half of the world's population.
Misinformation, doctors not formally trained in menopause and a lack of resources are sadly (and maddeningly) the status quo for women struggling to understand what is happening in our own bodies. We need to educate ourselves about how to navigate the information and therapies that can help greatly impact our physical and mental quality of life.
This book is a HUGE step in the right direction. This is a 'one-stop shop' for everything you need to know to arm yourself with knowledge and options to live through the perimenopause years. Down-to-earth (albeit with more of a 'doctory' feel in the first half), this is a must read for anyone whose end game will be menopause. The journey doesn't have to be rough, suffered alone or in silence. There IS true power in knowing you are not alone and that you have options. Dr. Haver encourages us to not accept the 'it is what it is' mentality and arm ourselves with knowledge so we can actively advocate for ourselves and insist on accurate information from the medical field and our own health care professionals
Many women have received 'substandard care and weak support. Many patients felt invalidated or reported that they hadn't been provided with any help or even given access to information that would allow them to understand the cause of their symptoms. (p4)
Personally, this book got me to finally book an appointment with my doctor. Going into the appointment with a clearer understanding of my symptoms and perimenopause helped a lot and allowed my doctor (who is amazing) and I to jump right into the conversation. I left the appointment elated that I was listened to and taken seriously (while simple these are both powerful!) and that we had set a plan in motion. For me that included trying Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).
I hope that this book gets into many women's hands. We have been fed misinformation or outright neglected by the medical community, but with the facts, support and a sense of community, women can choose how they will navigate these years and understand our amazing bodies which will lead to a better quality of life.
