informative reflective sad medium-paced

3.25

An interesting and thoroughly researched book that could have been shorter or more concise. The problem with a history of an issue as cyclical as xenophobia is that the same basic pattern happens over and over again, and the book is in a bind: If you elide the details of one group's treatment, you could be seen as erasing prejudice against them, but if you don't, you repeat the same basic tropes in every chapter. The book opts for the latter, which is the right choice but which still doesn't totally work for me. Valuable insights, but not the most engaging read.
