While the Duke Was Sleeping was the While You Were Sleeping historical rom-com adaptation I did not know I needed. I absolutely loved Poppy our flower shop girl who dreams of the Duke of Autenberry from a comfortable distance. The premise is pretty much the same, Poppy saves the Duke from being run over by a carriage after a street brawl with his bastard Scottish half-brother Struan Mackenzie who is as surly as he is delicious.

A maid hears Poppy praying that the Duke gets better so they can get married (a complete and utter fantasy as they have barely uttered a word to each other) and she announces to the family that Poppy is his fiance. Poppy tries to return and explain that she isn't promised to Marcus but get embroiled in their family drama by a family friend Lord Strickland. Strickland does not believe the Duke will make it and does not want to add any more turmoil to the family particularly the Duke's adorable step mother, the dowager Duchess Graciela who he is clearly in love with. Graciela accepts Poppy and Struan (who Marcus hates) into the family with warm open arms despite their difference in station. Over a Christmas holiday in the country things heat up with Poppy and the sexy Scot, even though and maybe especially because he believes that Poppy is his much hated half-brother's mistress.

This is my first 5⭐ read of the year and probably my favorite new-to-me author discovery in a long time. I'm excited to dive into her back catalogue.

My rating: 4.5 Stars

How far would you let a fantasy go? Poppy Fairchurch is forced to answer that very question. As a girl in a flower shop, her marriage options are quite limited. She dreams big, however, especially when it comes to the Duke of Autenberry. She fancies herself in love with him. Saving the Duke from a fight and an impending carriage accident leads Poppy down a very interesting trail. When she immediately runs into his handsome, bastard half-brother Stuan MacKenzie.

It doesn't take Poppy long after meeting Struan for her to realize that this man might actually be the man of her dreams, not the Duke. How awkward for her, especially, because there is a twist to her infatuation with the Duke. She tells his family that she is his fiance and they believe her. All but Struan. One look into Poppy's eyes and Struan just knows she is lying - and that he is incredibly drawn to her.

Sound familiar at all? Remember the blockbuster hit While You Were Sleeping? Yes, indeed. This retelling of that story was done with flair. I was drawn in from the first page and didn't let up with this book until I completed it.

I adored Poppy. Not only did she make the perfect heroine, she was the opposite of hapless. Not only was she extremely resourceful, but her role as a big sister made me smile more than once. Struan was pretty terrific too. He was a sexy Scot, and a self-made man, despite his illegitimate status. The Duke was fun, although he pretty much slept through the entire book. Imagine waking up engaged! The rest of the cast of characters were a delight as well. All in all, a terrific story and makes me want to carve out time to watch the related film.

While the Duke Was Sleeping is the first book in The Rogue Files series. It is followed by The Scandal of it All (2017), The Duke Buys a Bride (2018), and This Scot of Mine, which will be released in March, 2019.

You know this was a pleasant time. A lot of reviews are comparing this to the movie but to me they were separate stories even though this was clearly based off of it. I could enjoy this without comparing it at every turn to the movie. I wanted different things from books vs movies and this delivered in a lot of ways for me.

A fun take on While You Were Sleeping.
funny lighthearted medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Poppy fantasizes about the Duke of Autenberry. Everybody should have a dream. However, when she notices the Duke in a fight outside of the flower shop, she ends up saving the Duke's life. While delivering the unconcious Duke to his residence, the housekeeper overhears Poppy and assumes that she is the Duke's fiance. The Duke's best friend convinces Poppy to let the misunderstanding continue. While the Duke's illegitimate half brother is convinced that she is only the Duke's mistress. A bit far-fetched, but fun. Maybe 3.5.

Rounding from 2.5 stars. This plot is a little ridiculous, even for me, and I don't hold my entertainment to very high reality standards. But it's a fun, quick read, if you can stop thinking how unlikely certain events are.

My first Sophie Jordan book and definitely not my last. Loved getting to see both characters thoughts and feelings and the bits of humor thrown in had me laughing and smiling. Will definitely read the next on in the series.

While you were sleeping is one of my favorite romantic comedies so I hoping this book would have a similar light heartedness. Unfortunately it didn’t. While it kept the same broad strokes as the movie it lost ball the humor. The male lead is not particularly likable. I really detest romance novels that perpetuate the no means yes and if a woman protests it just means try harder tropes. These ideas are not just dated they are dangerous.
