Penderwicks with boys. Family consisting of 2 dads, 4 adopted boys from different birth families and cultural origins, a large Maine coon cat, and a pug. POV moves around among the boys who are in kindergarten, 4th grade (two of them), and 6th grade. They all navigate various difficulties: Frog is starting school, and his family does not believe his best friend, Ladybug Li, from school is real (just because he has a "baby brother" named Connecticut and a pet cheetah who goes with him everywhere that they cannot see...). Jax's best friend changes, and they grow apart while Jax works on a diplomacy mission with the grumpy Vietnam veteran next door for a class project. Eli starts a new school for gifted children and discovers that it isn't as great as he had hoped. Sam, a sports star, considers auditioning for the school play and deals with some high school hooligans. Best for ages 9-12.

My students enjoyed this book, especially the funny antics of Frog (and his "supposedly" imaginary girlfriend). It wasn't as poignant as many of the other read-alouds I've done, but was still alright. My listeners really didn't like the ending though.

2 dads, 4 adopted kids, 1 cat, 1 dog (Sir Puggleton), a big house, a grumpy neighbor, a new school, and days filled with insanity. I loved loved loved it. Don't think too hard about it, just enjoy.

Oh so lovely. More books like this, please. Books where "non-traditional" families are presented in super straightforward, low key ways. Where the book isn't about "OMG LOOK AT THIS NON-TRADITIONAL FAMILY WITH LGBTQ PEOPLE IN IT!" Instead, it's all like, "Hey, look at these interesting characters with quirky personalities doing funny things and sad things and living their lives!"
Every character in the Family Fletcher is memorable. I loved coasting along with them for a year, learning about their troubles and happinesses, and feeling like a part of the family.

SO good! A loving, happy, yet human/normal/fallible family of two dads and four boys navigates life, school, and relationships with humor and grace. There were definitely a few predictable moments but also plenty of unexpected ones, and the rhythm of the book felt natural, not forced into a narrative arc. I loved the characters and enjoyed the stories.
