I love Phryne Fisher and the series is my favorite mystery series. That being said this is one of the weaker books in the series, however I enjoyed it enough to say you that shouldn’t skip it in your reading order.

I find the parts with the professor long and drawn out, and didn't enjoy them. Particularly as there's a lot of extra characters and events that don't move the mysteries along much.
The Ruth plot... Too convenient. I don't know if it's trying to mimic the romances Ruth might have read, but it just didn't pay off for me. Also couldn't get over that while dealing with the case of Rose and Ruth missing that the Fisher household was not a mountain of tension - my brain would be petrified of her ending up in a similarly vulnerable way. (dot was cheerful cuz it was dawn but Ruth is missing? What?)
I did enjoy Bert's instruction on how to get information from a kidnapper lol.
Daniels is usually very good at accents but the Scottish one is maybe her weakest. Still, a great job narrating

In general these are very gentle and stylish books and I like that fine about them, they're terribly enjoyable. But when Phryne's daughter is missing, I can't buy that she wouldn't abandon everything to get her back. The tendency for Phryne to go on business as usual when things are at their most perilous was just not something I could buy here. Plus, the level of coincidence strained credulity.
