I think most people will find something in this book to be helpful and inspiring. Lots of different ideas about how to forge connections with others and how to be a better listener.

My main critique of this book is that it draws so heavily from so many other books and researchers and philosophers and scientists that it’s more of a lit review than an original book. But it is structured with care and a bit of genius and there are many insightful, original observations and conclusions. I also feel conflicted about the author’s bland, white, boomer ways…but that’s a bit of an ad hominem critique, and if anyone needs a book to help them develop empathy and human curiosity, it’s bland white boomers, so thank you David Brooks. My favorite surprise about the book was the focus on friendship. I don’t think we talk enough about friendship. There are plenty of books about romantic relationships, work, faith…and this does have a bit of all, that, too. But it really lifts up friendship and the smaller human connections that illuminate our days. I love that. And, as I said, there were many jewels of insight. I shared quotes and ideas from this book with a half dozen people as I was reading it. This will earn a spot on my shelf. And maybe an extra copy to give away.
