I haven’t had a book make me ponder our current societal situation as much as Coates’s 2017 publication. I’m not one for returning back after I’ve finished something, but I’ll be returning to this one as this current “administration” continues for the next four years.

I did not care for Between the World and Me, but I think the author has found his voice in detailing the impact of Obama's presidential election on the black civil rights movement. I hope he continues to keep writing.

Loved the weaving of memoirs style writing between each essay.

I've been gobbling up everything written by TNC since right around the time the first essays in this book came out around the beginning of the Obama administration. Obviously he has become one of the nation's most essential essayists over the following years. This is, to me, his finest book so far as it collects his best essays, which I think is where his writing shines the brightest. The last three essays in particular are just phenomenal illuminations on complicated sociological issues.

Really moving, essential reading.

His perspective is intensively valuable.

This was excellent—not only because of his writing (which is frequently brilliant) but also because he tracks and comments on his own growth as a writer. The material is thought-provoking for its content and for its value in illuminating how writers change over time.

Reading this the day following Election Day in 2024 was a regrettable choice, mourning progress is taxing. Still these essays were thoughtful, personal and striking.
