I know I will never be truly woke. But, on a quest to begin to understand my own privilege, I am forever indebted to Ta-Nehisi Coates, who is patient enough to break down what I should -but don't- know. This is a wonderful collection of essays, with introductions, written during the most politically optimistic eight years thus far of my life. But, everything that rises, must fall. Still. Mr. Coates is a brilliant and skilled writer, even when his subject is so sad. These stories really do a wonderful job of outlining the black experience in our nation, and how the policies of our government, which did so much to help establish a white middle class, purposely left Black Americans behind.
