Incredibly well-written in some parts, yet confusingly redundant in others. While I enjoyed the different descriptions of Lincoln and his grief, many of the ghostly characters flit in and out of the story incessantly, causing no emotional impact to the story whatsoever. The avant-garde writing style takes getting used to, and that is partly why this book would do a lot better with more concentrated and well-developed characters.

thoroughly enjoyed the story and have profound admiration for the experimental form - it left a bit to be desired in my humble opinion, but didn't take away from the bittersweet narrative

Big recommend to absolutely everyone to read this!!! I do encourage reading a Saunders short story first so you can be more familiar with his style of storytelling before jumping straight into this. But so so good! This is what creativity and storytelling and character-creation and legends of history are meant to be!

I wanted to love this book. And, I certainly recognize the brilliance, creativity, and uniqueness of it. I suspect it may be one of those books that, if I pick it up at a different time, I might feel completely different about it. I wish I had done more research on it before reading it as I think that may have helped.
