I'm finally done!
It was definitely a journey and I enjoyed it very much.
After having grown up watching the movies finally getting to this point where I have now also read all three books feels... I'm not sure, maybe satisfying? rewarding? I can't really think of the right word, but I feel really happy right now.
I think the movies are a wonderful adaptation but the cool thing about adaptations that people often forget I feel like is that the adaption is taking place only because the original source was so good that people wanted it to get adapted. Do you know what I mean?
I love experiencing stories in different types of media. Often times the original medium (books for example) are better at telling the story, it makes sense since that's how it was conceived.
Adaptations often aren't as good at certain things, but they can excel at other things that the original medium couldn't do.
If you take books and movies for example, one obvious difference is that you can actually hear and see what is happening, hence why it’s called an audiovisual medium.
Anyway, I am getting off-track here, my point is that both are worthy of existing and are able to do things that the other can't.
Which is why I love experiencing both. Having both watched the movies and read the books now I can fully appreciate or I am able to appreciate the world and the characters more.
I got to experience both of the best parts of the movies and the books! Anyway, rant over, many other people have been able to put into words why The Lord of the Rings series is as good as it is.
So, if you have time and can and want to re-experience The Lord of the Rings (assuming you watched the movies and liked them lol) all over you should definitely try to read the books.

Maybe 3 stars is too harsh but I absolutely fell in love with this world in The Hobbit and Fellowship of the Ring, Two Towers felt different to me and here there is something missing as well. The ring being destroyed felt very anticlimactic, the battle scenes aren't that interesting to read and the ending drags on.
I still love this world and maybe reading it so fast (and forcing myself to keep reading) made it unpleasant so I hope when I reread this in a few years, I'll love it but for now I only love the first book of this trilogy. The complete ending with Sam was very touching.
The appendices I only skimmed through for now but there is so much information, it shows the love that was put into this world and I'm definitely interested in reading that some day!

The world building is so deep that even the appendices are interesting. It’s amazing that Tolkien had time to craft such a beautiful story with iconic characters and deep themes alongside a crafting of a world with such unbelievable depth. Before I finished the series, I didn’t realize just how complex and beautiful it was and for years discounted it as just an inspiration for better works. But now I realize that it has been such an inspiration not just because of its world building, but because of all that it has to say about relationships, time, and tragedy. I think I’m starting to get why this Tolkien guy is so popular.
