The re-read is finished.
1. When I first read these at 12 or 13-years-old, I remember being so frustrated that half the book consisted of appendices and lineages, etc. It’s still an interesting way to tell a story, especially considering The Silmarillion—with the details of the history of Tolkien’s world—was published posthumously. Instead, all condensed history is laid out after the primary story has finished. Suddenly, some gaps are filled, settings and places and character motivations make more sense, the world feels more complete. But there was something to be said for journeying through The Lord of the Rings without this complete history, without knowing all the details until the end, that added to the feeling of mysticism, mystery, and depth in the world.
2. I need to read this on a scheduled basis. What a nostalgic comfort this was.

I officially finished LOTS so I am a true fantasy reader!
- JK, you can be a true fantasy reader without reading classic fantasy, don't let anyone decide what makes you a fantasy reader. -
Said that I have spent most of my reader life wanting to read this big book and I finally did, YAY!!
I really like it despite some things I wasn't a big fan of, for example that after two books Frodo and Sam destroy the ring in like 2 pages, but despite some little things this was a true masterpiece.
This was the beginning of my favorite genre and what a journey!
I can't wait to dive into other tales from the Middle Earth!

The people on Bart did not know I finished lord of the rings for the first time. No one tells you, you’re going to cry. I think I’ve complained in every other review about how distant I felt from Frodo. The last five pages of this book did what the rest of the series could not for me: made me love Frodo. All of the characters are so special to me now, that’s my family! Love this series badly, I get it. The conflicts were compelling, the battle scenes were inspiring, Gandalf got his jokes in, the hobbits were hobbiting like no other hobbit before.
