short and sweet but beautifully done. the prose was magnificent and really eloquently illustrated the love that michael, ellis and annie had for each other.
These characters and their complex relationships draw you in; a quick, thought provoking read.

I wish I liked this book more, but it fell short for me. I wanted to know more about the characters and like the blurb says "what happened in the in-between years." At the end, I had a lot of unanswered questions.
This novel was a touching and melancholic portrait of two men and their love for one another over the course of their lives. My favorite part of this novel was the vivid imagery and cinematic prose. Sarah Winman’s sentences are absolutely gorgeous and her ability to paint such vibrant scenes full of life made for a wholly enjoyable reading experience.
I appreciated the complex relationship dynamics between the triangle of the three main characters and the love they shared for one another. The story lacked a more in-depth dive into the psyche of each character, but this transitioned in the second half of the novel when there was a shift in the narrative.
In all, this was definitely a sad and moving novel, but because the reader is left with a surface level rendering of events, I wasn’t misty-eyed by the end, but rather hit with an overall sense of loss or longing similar to what one of the main characters experiences by the ending. A good first buddy read experience with Cam

This book tries too hard to be intense and soulful. The writing is overwrought, it has no apparent story line and the constant shifting back and forth in time is not always smooth and consistent. By the end of the novel, not much has really happened.
4.5 Powerful, yet only 200 pages. I love an author that understands that sometimes less, is more.
