I wanted to love this so much - and I did, in a way. The story is so sad to me. Wishing we knew now what we knew then, and how far we still have to go. This is like a love triangle that works, but it doesn't. And I can't help but think how often unsaid things, create such chasms between friends, and lovers. So unnecessary, and so sad.
Ellis, Annie and Michael have such an exquisite love story - and so many unanswered questions between them. This story is short, but powerful, and a lot of those questions are answered as we go through it. Sadly, there is so much love, but also so much loss. It's heartbreaking what they all endure.
I loved getting into Dora's story in the beginning - she was such an interesting character - but after that I struggled to get into it - finally really feeling like I was engaged in the story mid-way with Michael. But I coulnd't follow the writing style very well.... like they were these snippets of thoughts, run of mouth words, memories, flashes... I had trouble connecting the timelines and often found myself re-reading to stay engaged.
I love the descriptiveness of surroundings, and feelings, and characters (the sunflowers a character alone! and there was a lot of swimming.... I wonder what that signifies?), and the ending was so beautifully poetic. I just really wanted more story, more things happening.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book.

I don't really know how to review this book.
I listened to the audio book. And was slightly confused in the beginning of the book. I had to google who was who. The way the book is written is nice to listen to, but can be a bit confusing.
Sarah has a beautiful way with words and a real unique storytelling talent. This is something I really enjoyed.
The references to Holland were not correct. The Netherlands are not called Holland! In the Audio book, names were also pronounced incorrectly and as a Dutch person this irritated me slightly.
Tin Man seemed too short to give the reader a chance to understand the characters well enough to feel enough sympathy. I was so hyped about this book because I heard great things about this and other books by Sarah Winman. Of course it might be just my personal deceived expectations about the way this book should have ended. I think the ultimate failing for me was the structure. This novel could have been successful, and I too see what she was going for in the structure, but it was difficult to invest in a relationship that we only get exposition about, and never get to see or feel for ourselves. I never got a sense of passion or real intimacy between the two characters, which is really what I want more than anything in a story about a relationship of any kind. I didn't feel any emotional intensity from any of the relationships, let alone the one that was supposed to be the emotional crux of the narrative. I think it's going to be pretty forgettable for me because I did not care about the character. I am quite sad about this, because I had high expectations. Maybe I will read the book physically in the future, because I have the feeling that this book has to be read several times before you can really understand it.

I adored this book! It’s about all the shades of love that make life and this book almost unbearably beautiful. Tin Man is overflowing with tenderness and heart and leaving the lives of Ellis, Michael and Annie has left me so bereft that I’m planning on visiting them again very soon. The novel is a humble homage to men’s capacities of compassion and kindness and pure love and women who yearn and selflessly give and nurture.
This is a poignant, heartbreaking little gem of a book that I sort of feel honored to have read.
This was such a beautiful book. Full review coming soon.
