Moving and melancholic story about friendship, queerness, and grief. A story about what could have been and the repercussions of those decisions. I'm always amazed at the emotion contained in such a short book every time I read it- it pulls on your heartstrings the whole time.
One of the most outstanding books I have ever read. Sarah Winman uses words and language to weave invisible threads in and around your heart, around your body then back through your heart, leaving you cocooned, trapped yet safe, unable and unwilling to free yourself.

And I wonder what the sound of a heart breaking might be. And I think it might be quiet, unperceptively so, and not dramatic at all. Like the sound of an exhausted swallow falling gently to earth.
I impulsively chose “Tin Man” by Sarah Winman for its brevity, drawn to its concise nature despite a lacklustre Goodreads rating. To my surprise, the book defied expectations. Goodreads, while not a definitive guide, sometimes overlooks gems. Lower-rated books on this app seem to be my most enjoyable reads.
In “Tin Man” Sarah Winman opts for dialogue without traditional quotation marks. Initially disheartening, this unconventional choice becomes a unique aspect challenging the conventional norms of punctuation. The absence of quotation marks adds to the book's distinctive style emphasizing the author's intention to craft a narrative that stands out from traditional structures.
The novel's unconventional structure coupled with the author's narration of the audiobook herself — a decision that enriched the experience proved a commendable fusion.
“Tin Man” captivates with its haunting, evocative prose, unravelling emotions with a melancholic beauty. Winman's mastery in conveying a narrative without conventional markers showcases the power of well-crafted prose.
It is centred on Ellis and Michael, an almost love story that explores the mundane uniqueness of their lives, delving into themes of grief, loss, love, friendship, and loneliness. The narrative's depressingly relatable nature binds readers to the characters, creating an emotionally charged journey.
The book's strength lies in its ability to convey profound emotions, making the reader feel emotionally asunder. Winman's prowess shines through, proving that unconventional formats can enhance a story if done right.
I'm still not recovered from this hauntingly beautiful prose of this book.
Overall Rating: 4/5 Stars.

Such a beautiful book. This is my second book that I have read by Sarah Winman and she writes from the soul.
Turbulent, complicated love between two boys that they carry into adulthood. A beautiful friendship between 3 people that is as complicated as it is simple. All set in the other ‘town’ of Oxford rather than the ‘gown’. Tells us life from the car plant rather than the colleges.
Read it. It is short but glorious.
