I read this for my book club and it also fulfilled a reading challenge prompt. It's hard to get a real sense of the characters and it's takes a while to get into the book. Some good discussion points for a book club though

"I look at these young men, not in envy but in wonder. It is for them now, the beauty of discovery, that endless moonscape of life unfolding."

If Sarah Winman's were the only books left in the world I would be wholly satisfied. I felt my heart contort as I read this book. The pain Winman conveys is immense. Heartbreaking. But she is so tender, the prose so beautifully crafted, and the language intricately woven. Everything is amplified by its restraint - such a small book so heavy with feeling. The NY Times were right to call it “a small miracle”. There were moments when the intensity of it left me feeling breathless. I’m not one to cry while reading, but Winman will get me every time.
